Until now, the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) doesn’t have a use whereby the populace sees it as a very important platform to be registered on, although there’s been the likes of Driver’s licence number, International Passport Number and some state government’s various programmes.
The National Identity Number has been made a ‘must-have’ provided that a person has a phone line registered with a telecommunication company in Nigeria. This decision, announced by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in december 2020 brought about over capacitated visits by the over 80% unregistered populace to the commission’s offices around the country during the pandemic. Blockage date has been extended at such all phone lines not linked with an NIN are now expected to be blocked by april 6.
Recently, Dr. Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy had expressed that the government had begun the process of replacing the Bank verification Number (BVN) with the NIN. He further expressed that the main reason for the replacement is due to the fact the NIN is backed by the law unlike the BVN which is just a bank policy imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
This transition is expected to be easier because all Nigerian phone line users are expected to be registered on the NIMC database. Hopefully, it also brings an end to the insecurity issues in Nigeria as expressed by the Minister himself as the purpose of its cogent need.
