The US patent and trademark office recently granted and published a patent filed by Apple which consists of a system of finger gesture capture technology to navigate a virtual environment.
The granted patent is suggestive of how serious Apple is taking on this project especially after drafting Dan Ricco, its former hardware chief into overseeing the AR and VR section of the company earlier this year.
According to an image of what looks like how it would work, provided by the patent office, the VR headset has a mapped out space less than 90 degrees in which the finger gestures are expected to be performed for the camera and depth sensors to catch. It should be able to relate both with depth and gesture measures while tracking the hand movement.
Leaks has also suggested that the headset would have a dual 8k display, LiDAR scanning sensor, eye-tracking technology and micro OLED display. Wearable haptics controllers might be the complementary device to make this newly patented technology work out.
The VR headset is expected to be launched by 2022 and will be priced around $3000 while weighing 150g which is lighter than the average iPhone.
