The Nigeria electricity system is a decentralized one. It used to be controlled by the defunct National Electric Power Authority, popularly known as NEPA before it was transformed into the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), and now, being run by different companies. It’s a pity power supply in Nigeria is epileptic, businesses can’t depend on the government for its provision.
A visit to markets in the cities after a power outage is a real first hand smoking mission as most shops would need to turn on their generator to power appliances necessary for their businesses. This is a major contributor to the depletion of the ozone layer which in turns causes anomallies in the climate of a geographical area.
This is an opportunity for startups to come up with innovative way of providing power for which we’ve seen an increase in solar power companies. However, the cost of capital and maintenance of scale is relatively high considering the cost of living in most areas. A solution that addresses cost is big a need that will hit the market big.
